Talk about a possible upset of Christian Bale proves unfounded as the actor wins for his radical reinvention as boxer Dicky Eklund in ‘The Fighter.’ Is there anyone who can lay a glove on him for the supporting actor Oscar?

A moment later, he comes backstage and answers questions about host Ricky Gervais taking on the HFPA: ‘It’s what he’s meant to do. That’s what comedy is all about ... I hope he’s going to keep going further.’

Then he goes non-comedic, giving an earnest talk about his family, and the ‘family of the people of Lowell [, Mass.].’
