Golden Globes: Melissa Leo is finally allowed into the party

Melissa Leo drew plenty of critical acclaim for her role as a desperate single mother in ‘Frozen River.’ But getting a win for her turn as a manipulative mom in ‘The Fighter’ brings the 50-year-old actress a new level of validation.
Back in 2008, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t nominate her for her ‘River’ turn, and she noted backstage Sunday, with maybe a small amount of bitterness, that she had to stand outside a Globes party and watch the happenings on a monitor.
Leo, who’s looking like a front-runner for supporting actress at the Oscars, is quickly evolving into this year’s Richard Jenkins, the ‘Visitor’ star and actor’s actor whose award-season narrative is all about dues-paying. Leo seems to be aware of, and savvily tapping into, that storyline, making several remarks about how hard she’s worked while under the radar all these years.
‘I have a son,’ she said. ‘He’s 23 years old, I’ve raised him on the back of acting.’
