For Angels’ right-hander Jered Weaver, Tuesday’s start in Cleveland is another chance to burnish what is becoming a very strong Cy Young award resume.
Consider:
-- Weaver has made 12 consecutive quality starts, the longest streak by an Angel in more than two decades.
-- His 1.81 ERA is the lowest after 21 starts in franchise history.
-- And the All-Star Game starter hasn’t lost in more than two months, going 7-0 with a 1.28 ERA in 11 starts.
Add that all together and Angel Manager Mike Scioscia says Weaver’s name needs to be mentioned when the conversation turns to the game’s best pitchers.
‘He’s slowly grown into that group,’ Scioscia said. ‘Just his evolution. He’s turned into an elite pitcher. He’s got more length to his game. He can pitch deeper into games. And that’s really important when you talk about that elite group.’
Weaver (13-4, 1.81) lost his only start to the Indians this season, allowing a season-high four runs in a season-low six innings in Anaheim in early May. But he hasn’t allowed a run in Progressive Field in his last two starts and in 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA lifetime in Cleveland. The lineups:
