There are no squeaky wheels on the Montebello Oilers right now.
Montebello boys’ basketball (11-5) beat El Rancho, 64-57, Wednesday and has won four consecutive games. Suddenly, the Oilers look like the team to beat in the Almont League. Especially after knocking off one league contender already this season: beating Keppel by eight points in a December tournament. That’s not too shabby for a squad that has zero returning starters.
‘Before the season started, I thought we could be in the top three of league,’ Coach Marino Angulo said. ‘Now I think we have a great chance at winning it.’
Angulo said the Oilers have been winning courtesy of a powerful post game -- led by 6-foot-2 senior center Oscar Rosales and two sophomores, Andrew Torres and Jeremy Solis.
Montebello plays at Pioneer tonight 7 p.m., then kicks off league play on Jan. 8 against San Gabriel.
