PEKING — Chinese explorers have completed their first research base in the Antarctic, the Great Wall Station, after nearly a month of effort, the official Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
The 500-member expedition, which left Shanghai on Nov. 20, began moving into the steel-framed buildings with communication and weather-monitoring equipment on last week, the report said.
Construction of the station on King George Island, south of Argentina, was delayed by bad weather in which the expedition’s two vessels left to seek haven in calmer waters.
China became the 32nd member of the Antarctic Treaty last June and has promised to renounce any territorial claim on the icy continent.
