COLOGNE, West Germany — A crusading businessman has a novel plan to end cigarette smoking among his employees--a $26-a-month bonus for those kicking the habit, a newspaper said Friday.
The Bild newspaper said Heinz Foerster, 65-year-old head of a warehousing business in the Cologne suburb of Hermuelheim, offered the 100-mark raise to his entire 45-member staff.
Thirty-six gave up tobacco on the spot.
“It just gives you a headache,” said Foerster, a confirmed anti-smoker. “But anyone who starts again has to pay the raise back.”
