M. G. O’Neil announced Thursday that he will step down as chief executive of GenCorp Inc., the diversified tire manufacturer that was founded by his father, William, in 1913.
A. William Reynolds, GenCorp president and O’Neil’s designated successor, will be the first person outside the O’Neil family to head the Akron, Ohio-based company.
O’Neil, 63, who has headed GenCorp since 1960, will remain chairman after his Aug. 1 retirement but said he plans to devote more time to personal matters. He said in a statement that he will continue to take part in GenCorp’s planned divestiture of its 45% holding in Frontier Airlines.
GenCorp, with annual revenue of $2.7 billion in 1984, operates the nation’s fifth-largest tire maker, General Tire; a media network, RKO General; an aerospace firm, Aerojet General, and other diversified interests.
Reynolds, 51, a former TRW executive, became president and chief operating officer of GenCorp last September.
