Reopening of TMI Atom Plant Blocked

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — A federal court today blocked the reopening of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, closed since the nation’s worst commercial nuclear accident six years ago, the governor’s office said.
The U.S. 3rd Circuit Court in Philadelphia issued the stay of a Nuclear Regulatory Commission order allowing the reopening until further notice, a spokesman for Gov. Dick Thornburgh said. The court also ordered the state, which had sought to nullify the NRC order, to file briefs on June 17, he said.
