MOSCOW — A Russian vacationing with his aunt in Lithuania found a hoard of old gold coins worth more than $75,000, the government newspaper Izvestia reported Friday.
Pyotr Yefimov, from the small town of Vorkuta on the Arctic Circle, found the coins inside a length of tubing he had taken from a pile of rubbish to make a fishing rod.
The tube contained about 170 coins dating from 1888-1911. In accordance with Soviet law, the coins were handed over to the state, but Yefimov and his family received one quarter of their value.
