Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace spent a comfortable night recovering from spinal surgery to stop pain from gunshot wounds he suffered in a 1972 assassination attempt, his hospital said in Englewood, Colo. Aide Billy Joe Camp said doctors at Craig Hospital told him that Wallace was “doing very well, and the postoperative progress seems to be as good as could possibly be expected.” He said that the governor was “talking, joking some and reading cards and letters,” and that his pain was subsiding.
