Veteran diplomat Thomas R. Pickering arrived in Tel Aviv to take over as new U.S. ambassador to Israel. Pickering, the former U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, said on his arrival that Israel has taken “courageous and determined” steps to curb runaway inflation that has crippled its economy. He added that he was assured before leaving Washington that a $1.5-billion aid package for Israel will be completed this week. Pickering succeeds Samuel W. Lewis, who ended an eight-year tour of duty.
