Brad Greer of Huntington Beach shot a four-under-par 68 Friday to win the $46,000 State Open golf tournament at Ventura.
Greer’s final round gave him a 72-hole total of 276, two shots in front of John McComish of Santa Maria. McComish, who trailed Greer by a shot after three rounds, closed with a 69.
For Greer, who turned professional just before the tournament, the victory was worth $8,100. McComish pocketed $4,860 as the runner-up.
Beth Daniel fired a seven-under-par 65 to move into a tie with Patty Sheehan (67) and first-round leader Amy Alcott (70) midway through the World Championship of Women’s Golf at Buford, Ga.
The three players were at 135.
Daniel, who won this 12-player event in 1980 and 1981--the first two years of the six-year-old tournament--started the second round five shots behind Alcott.
Daniel dropped six shots back at the turn but ran off four straight birdies on Nos. 12-15, and she and Sheehan wound up tied for the lead when Alcott bogeyed the final hole after her drive hit a cart path and bounced into deep rough.
Australian Wayne Grady, playing his first season in the United States, shot an eight-under-par 64 for a two-round total of 133 and a one-stroke lead over Ken Green in the $450,000 Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich.
Green, 27, also a rookie, doesn’t have a top-10 finish in 21 tournaments this year but has been in the money 16 times. He shot a 65 Friday.
Britain’s Sam Torrance shot a five-under-par 67 and took a share of the lead at 137 with Ireland’s Des Smyth, who shot a 68, at the halfway point of a $200,000 tournament at York, England.
Lee Trevino shot a 74 for a 146 total and made the cut.
Kim Shipman, a tour rookie whose best finish is a tie for 11th, shot a five-under-par 67 to take the first-round lead by two strokes over Deedee Lasker, Jane Geddes and Debbie Austin in the $200,000 LPGA MasterCard International at the Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford, N.Y.
Peter Thomson of Australia birdied the first three holes on the way to an eight-under-par 64 to take a one-stroke lead in the $225,000 du Maurier Champions seniors tournament at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam, Canada.
Thomson, winner of six senior events this year, also eagled the par-four 16th hole when he sank a 9-iron shot from 122 yards.
Jim Ferree had a 65, and Lee Elder shot a 68 to share third place with Ben Smith.
Thomson’s round was one shot short of the course record set two years ago by Canadian amateur Vern Johnson.
