PASSING JUDGMENT

Colman Andrews asked the question, “How many times does a restaurant have to be reviewed in order to pass judgment on it?” (Restaurant Notebook, July 28).

He quoted an authority who gave the semi-musical answer that it’s sort of like listening to Mozart one time; one meal in a restaurant might be enough.

Now wait a minute. My wife once cooked a really great meal; maybe even twice. But I guarantee that with all her gifts this is no culinary genius.

On the other hand, if Mozart composed just one work, he would still be a genius. I mean, you can put Mozart’s piece of music on a cassette and still have it forever.

I don’t have to tell you what happens to that great meal you had on one occasion at some restaurant. On that you would base a recommendation for me to go out and spend my fairly hard earned money?
