About 250 Indians representing 30 North American tribes gathered in Haddam Meadows State Park, Conn., for a weekend “powwow” that drew an estimated 10,000 persons to demonstrations and exhibits on the surviving native American cultures. Richard H. Harris of the state Department of Environmental Protection, a co-sponsor, said the Connecticut River Indian Powwow and Black Powder Rendezvous are useful in countering “stereotypes and misguided ethnocentric information.”
