S. African Blacks Back Sanctions, Poll Indicates

LONDON — South Africa’s urban blacks support international trade sanctions against the Pretoria government, but most doubt that apartheid will be ended short of civil war, according to a poll for the Sunday Times of London.
Of 400 persons polled by Markinor, a Gallup-affiliated firm, 77% favored sanctions and 21% thought sanctions would be wrong. The paper described this finding as “a reversal of previous trends in South African polls, which have tended to show a slim black majority against sanctions.”
