It was the meeting of the best in the west as the UCLA soccer team defeated Cal State Northridge, 2-1, Saturday night at North Campus Stadium in an exhibition contest before a crowd of 2,532.
The Bruins, the third-rated NCAA Division I team in the country last season with a 19-3-2 record, got both of their goals from junior forward Thomas Silvas. The first came with eight minutes remaining in the first half on a pass from midfielder Paul Krumpe. Silvas struck again 10 minutes into the second half when his kick rebounded off the outstretched arms of Cal State goalkeeper Mike Caputo.
