HONOLULU — Hurricane Rick, one of the strongest ever recorded in the North Pacific with winds of up to 170 m.p.h., today slowly veered away from Hawaii, whose residents had been warned to be ready to take precautions.
The hurricane was 750 miles east of Hilo on the island of Hawaii this morning and moving toward the northwest. The National Weather Service said Rick appeared to be slowly weakening and its projected path would keep it well east of the islands.
