TCU Suspends Six Players for Accepting Cash

Coach Jim Wacker of Texas Christian University suspended six football players for accepting cash from a TCU alumnus and said that the coaching profession needs to “get sick of” illegal recruiting.

“I will admit it was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life,” said Wacker, whose team plays today at Kansas State.

Wacker said he discovered that six players--among them star running back Kenneth Davis--had been receiving money as part of their original recruitment. There was no indication how much money was involved, and the alumnus was not identified.

The players were immediately suspended from the team, and Wacker said that they could return only if the NCAA issued a ruling in their behalf. He said that if the NCAA approved, he would welcome the players back.

Besides Davis, Wacker dismissed free safety Egypt Allen, strong safety Marvin Foster, defensive end Gary Spann, linebacker Gerald Taylor and defensive tackle Darron Turner. All were recruited before Wacker came to TCU.
