Nebraska Uses Its Reserves in 63-0 Win Over Oregon

LINCOLN, Neb. — Reserve I-back Paul Miles rushed for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns Saturday as No. 16 Nebraska rolled up 589 yards total offense in a 63-0 rout of Oregon.

It was the worst margin of defeat for the Ducks since a 68-3 loss to Oklahoma in 1972, and it was the most points scored against them since a 66-9 loss to Washington in 1974.

Nebraska, in improving its record to 2-1 after a season-opening loss to Florida State, limited Oregon (2-2) to 33 yards passing and 73 yards rushing.

Nebraska rolled to a 42-0 halftime lead as Miles gained 113 yards and scored on runs of 46 and 1 yards in relief of starter Doug DuBose.

DuBose, ranked fifth nationally in rushing, went out of the game in the first quarter when he injured a knee carrying to the one-yard line on Nebraska’s first scoring drive.

Fullback Tom Rathman ran the ball in to cap that drive. Reserve fullback Ken Kaelin then added a three-yard score in the first quarter.

The Cornhuskers scored 28 points in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Travis Turner, a 25-yard run by Keith Jones and the two runs by Miles.

Von Sheppard scored on an eight-yard wingback-around to open the second half and added another touchdown on a 27-yard reverse about six minutes later before the Huskers reserves completed the game.

Third-string fullback Dan Casterline finished the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Oregon quarterback Chris Miller managed only 6 completions in 20 attempts for 24 yards. He was intercepted three times, two of which led to Nebraska touchdowns.

The Ducks’ Tony Cherry, the nation’s ninth-leading rusher, was held to 55 yards in 12 carries.
