An elderly woman who became dazed when a fire broke out in the kitchen of her apartment Tuesday afternoon escaped serious injury when she was led out by a roommate and a housekeeper, officials said.
Helen Baker, 76, was in the kitchen of her unit in the Ponderosa Apartments at 17676 Cameron St. when her roommate, Vicki Laine, 77, and a housekeeper, Ellen Cole, heard the smoke detector go off shortly after 2 p.m., officials said.
Fire investigators said Laine and Cole went to the kitchen and found the drapes burning and Baker standing in a “daze.”
The two walked Baker out of the house and she was taken by ambulance to Huntington Humana Hospital, where she was treated and later released for a burn on her forehead.
The apartment was destroyed. Damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000, with an additional $20,000 in damage to the contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
