Storm Strengthens, Threatening Coasts of Florida, Georgia

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Isabel, which caused fatal floods and mud slides in Puerto Rico, strengthened Tuesday and turned its 65-m.p.h. winds northwest to threaten the Florida and Georgia coasts.
A late report from a reconnaissance plane found the season’s ninth tropical storm moving northwestward, carrying sustained winds of 65 m.p.h. and hurricane-strength gusts of 75 m.p.h.
“If the present motion continues, a hurricane watch may be required later tonight and warnings tomorrow (this) morning for portions of the Georgia and Florida east coasts,” an advisory said.
By Tuesday evening, the storm was centered 525 miles east-southeast of Daytona Beach, Fla. It was moving northwest at a rate of 15 to 20 m.p.h.
