Raytheon Co. reported an 11% increase in earnings and a 10.8% increase in revenue for the third quarter ended Sept. 30. Raytheon said that its largest business area, electronics, was the company’s biggest money-maker in the third quarter because of defense contracts. The strength in electronics was offset by continued softness in aircraft products, major appliances and energy services, the company said. At the end of September, Raytheon’s backlog of funded government orders was $4.8 billion, compared to $4.3 billion a year ago. The total backlog of orders was down from $6.6 billion last year to $6.5 billion this year.
