The steelmaker’s latest proposal for settling a crippling walkout left United Steelworkers bargainers with diminished hopes for a weekend settlement. “I’m less optimistic about finding agreement than I was earlier in the day,” said Paul D. Rusen, chairman of the USW’s 30-member bargaining committee. Although Rusen sent his group home Friday at mid-afternoon with no further meetings scheduled, he said bargaining would continue. “It’s not moving as rapidly as I had wanted it to,” he said.
