Freeway Lane Addition: Construction of an additional lane for the Costa Mesa Freewayshould be completed by Nov. 15, two months ahead of schedule, according to CalTrans officials. The $7.9-million project, begun in May, will add one lane in each direction on a 16.4-mile stretch between the Riverside Freeway and Bristol Street, making for a total of four, 11-foot-wide lanes in each direction instead of three at 12 feet wide. Most of the center median will be removed. The Orange County Transportation Commission will decide on Monday whether to allow general use of the fourth lane or designate it a “High Occupancy Vehicle” lane.
