Tennis Roundup : Czechs Win, 3-0, to Advance in Federation Cup

Top-seeded Czechoslovakia and fourth-seeded Bulgaria won matches Friday to join the United States and Australia in the semifinals of the Federation Cup, the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.

Czechoslovakia, which defeated Hungary, 3-0, at Toyota, Japan, faces Bulgaria, a 2-1 winner over Britain. The second-seeded United States, which gained the semifinals Thursday, takes on third-seeded Australia today.

Czechoslovakia won the Federation Cup in 1983 and 1984. The United States won for seven straight years before that, but this year it is playing without Chris Evert Lloyd and Martina Navratilova, the world’s top-ranked players.

At Indianapolis, Kathy Rinaldi defeated Melissa Gurney, 6-4, 6-3, and Bonnie Gadusek beat Mary Lou Piatek, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of a $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Top-seeded Yannick Noah of France gained the semifinals of a $175,000 tournament at Toulouse, France, defeating sixth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-3, 7-5.
