SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego football team, which will be going for its third straight victory, will play Occidental College at 7:30 tonight.
Since losing its first two games, USD has bounced back to defeat Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd.
“We’re getting better every week,” Coach Brian Fogarty said. “We’re not winning pretty, but we’re winning.”
Occidental (3-1) is coming off a 37-23 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Tiger quarterback Pat Guthrie threw touchdown passes of 76, 36 and 13 yards. Running back Vance Mueller, a four-year starter, gained 100 yards on 13 carries.
USD’s offense repeat last week’s performance when it ran 91 plays to Claremont’s 49, and the Toreros won, 8-7.
Fogarty is hoping for another big game from running back Roger Cloutier. In his first appearance of the season last week, Cloutier rushed 27 times for 125 yards.
“Having him back gives our offense more diversity,” Fogarty said. “He gives is a good inside runner.”
The Toreros could be short-handed in the secondary tonight. Strong safety Tim White has an injured knee, and cornerback Mike Macie has a concussion. The status of both is questionable.
