Sweetwater Sweeps Past Fullerton, 42-21

Sweetwater High School of San Diego, the state’s No. 1-ranked team, ran its winning streak to 30 wins Friday night in Fullerton District Stadium with an explosive 42-21 victory over previously unbeaten Fullerton.
Terry Rodgers, a senior running back and son of 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers, put on a dazzling exhibition for the Red Devils. The 5-foot 10-inch, 170-pound halfback ran for three touchdowns, scored two more on pass receptions and threw for another. He also had a 72-yard touchdown pass play nullified by a penality in the second quarter.
Sweetwater spotted Fullerton (4-1) an early 7-0 lead, then used 40- and 48-yard scoring runs by Rodgers to take a 12-7 lead. Rodgers turned a short pass from quarterback Richard Sanchez into a 34-yard scoring play with two seconds to play in the first half to give Sweetwater an 18-7 halftime lead.
After Fullerton drove 81 yards in 14 plays to cut the lead to 18-15, Sweetwater came back. Rodgers completed a 61-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
Rodgers surprised the Fullerton defense on the second play of the fourth quarter when he launched a perfect halfback pass to wide receiver Victor Ramirez for a 23-yard scoring play. Rodgers scored again on a 29-yard pass from Sanchez to close the scoring.
Rodgers finished with 117 yards rushing in 11 carriers, He also caught 4 passes for 84 yards and completed a pass for 23 yards.
