Police in Chile Storm Campus, Arrest 140 Students Protesting Military Rule

SANTIAGO, Chile — Riot police stormed a university campus Wednesday and arrested at least 140 students in the second day of protests against 12 years of Chilean military rule.
Authorities reported that six people were hospitalized with bullet wounds elsewhere in Santiago, including professional soccer player Mario Salinas; that nine bombs exploded, and that five labor leaders were arrested.
The students sought sanctuary in the national university’s engineering school after street battles with police on the second of two days of protest organized by opponents of President Augusto Pinochet. The demonstrators were seeking a return to democracy and the freeing of six union chiefs jailed in September for a previous round of protests.
Police called in reinforcements, surrounded the building and stormed it after throwing tear gas through the windows.
