Seventy members of Congress asked South African President Pieter W. Botha in an open letter to lift recently announced restrictions on media reporting of unrest in his country.”We are keenly aware of the critical problems facing South Africa. However, it is not the media that has caused them,” the letter said. The bipartisan group of lawmakers also said they are “greatly disturbed by numerous reports of journalists being beaten and arbitrarily detained over the last several months.”
