The Toreros took a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter thanks to a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Pat Dixon to Scott Reilly and a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Tom Woodward. Dixon completed 19 of 32 passes for 224 yards. Woodward gained 97 yards rushing in 30 carries.
St. Mary’s struck back thanks to Schoenhofer who scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter and on runs of 2 and 12 yards in the third quarter.
USD closed to within 21-20 on a 2-yard run by Dixon with 3:49 remaining in the fourth quarter but failed to take the lead when Dixon’s pass on a 2-point conversion try was knocked away. The Toreros’ final bid ended when Dixon was intercepted by St. Mary’s John Doyle at the Gaels’ 30-yard line with 1:34 remaining.
