ENCINITAS — A 45-year-old man drowned off Moonlight State Beach Friday evening, apparently while out surfing.
Noel Amherd of Los Altos, Calif., was taken from the water by lifeguards after he was found by a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department helicopter shortly after 5 p.m., a sheriff’s department spokesman said. He was declared dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital-Encinitas at 6 p.m.
Sgt. Paul Nevills said that a surfboard washed up on the beach about 45 minutes before deputies were called.
