Chinese President Li Xiannian, in a speech marking the lunar new year, said China’s economic successes have been “better than expected,” but he denounced some “bourgeois” elements in the Communist Party. Li attributed achievements such as last year’s 18% industrial growth and 13% agricultural growth to the Chinese people, “who worked hard” under party guidance.
