President Reagan asked Congress to approve $100 million in military and other aid in the next 18 months for the rebels fighting the leftist government of Nicaragua. In a message to the House and Senate, Reagan said that roughly $27-million worth of non-lethal aid that Congress approved for the contras last year was insufficient. About 30 members of the House have asked Reagan not to seek renewal of direct military assistance to the rebels, and several of the lawmakers have predicted a prolonged debate.
