The National Endowment for the Humanities announced that it will not award any grants or fellowships to applicants who are delinquent on repaying government-backed student loans. John Agresto, acting chairman of the humanities endowment, said in a statement that applicants will be required to disclose their loan status to be eligible for grants and fellowships, and that the endowment will seek the Education Department’s help in identifying delinquents. “We also hope this measure will encourage people” to settle their loan obligations, he said.
