East German swimmer Sylvia Gerasch set a world record of 2 minutes 28.20 seconds in the 200-meter breaststroke against the Soviet Union at Leningrad, according to Tass, the Soviet news agency.
Gerasch, 17, cut .13 of a second off the old mark held by her compatriot, Elke Herner, Tass reported.
