A Tijuana man fleeing an off-duty San Diego police officer in San Ysidro Thursday night ran onto a freeway and was struck by a hit-and-run motorist, a police spokesman said.
Juan Baldozinos, 22, was listed in good condition Friday at Mercy Hospital after suffering two broken legs, hospital spokesman Norman Green said.
Baldozinos was flown to the hospital by Life Flight after being struck by a car while he was running across the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
Officer James Stewart reported that he was off duty inside a restaurant in the 300 block of San Ysidro Boulevard when he saw Baldozinos having an argument with a waitress, apparently because she did not want to serve him any more alcohol, Robinson said. During the argument, Stewart saw Baldozinos threaten the waitress with a handgun, Robinson said.
After Baldozinos left the restaurant, Stewart approached the man and identified himself as a police officer. Baldozinos ran onto a nearby freeway ramp, Robinson said.
Police found a .25-caliber handgun near the accident scene. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the case but has no description of the car.
