Mike Pagel was traded by the Indianapolis Colts to the Cleveland Browns, avoiding a possible quarterback controversy for Colt coach Rod Dowhower. In fact, Dowhower went ahead and named recently acquired Gary Hogeboom as the team’s starter.
Pagel, who spent four seasons with the Colts, had a workout earlier with Cleveland as a prelude to the deal. It was learned that the Browns sent Indianapolis a seventh-round pick in the 1987 draft.
Pagel became expendable when the Colts obtained Hogeboom from Dallas and selected Illinois quarterback Jack Trudeau on the second round of the draft.
