Condor Egg Hatched at Wild Animal Park

A California condor egg was hatched successfully at the San Diego Wild Animal Park on Friday as the baby’s mother was being taken to the park after being captured in a bird sanctuary northwest of Los Angeles.
The baby, named Nojoqui, a Chumash Indian word meaning “meadow,” excreted its yolk sac soon after birth, an important sign that it is healthy, a park spokesman said. The egg was taken to the park on April 15 after scientists discovered it at a nesting site in the sanctuary. Its parents are the last known breeding condors.
With the birth, the California condor population rose to 27.
