A 9-year-old Los Angeles boy drowned in rapids of the Whitewater River in eastern Riverside County, sheriff’s deputies said. Robert P. Hernandez was playing in shallow water--with relatives nearby--when he was swept away by the current. A bystander tried to grab the boy, who was carried to a small island in the river, one-third mile south of Interstate 10. The boy was pronounced dead at Desert Hospital.
