3 Side Glances at Miss Liberty

Now that we are celebrating the refurbishing of the Statue of Liberty, it is time to consider what has become of the ideals it represents.

In fact, to be realistic about it, why not construct a new Statue of License, one dedicated to the excesses of our time--nuclear terror, uncontrolled crime, provocative militarism, the AIDS epidemic, pollution, drug addiction, poverty and government without statesmanship. Let’s erect this Statue of License to laissez-faire and greed.

What shape should this statue be? I suggest the dollar sign. It should be at least twice the size of the Statue of Liberty and, this is important, it should be built on quicksand. Then there might be some hope for the future.
