A land mine destroyed a truck loaded with passengers in northern Nicaragua, killing 32 people, including 12 children. the official Voice of Nicaragua radio reported. The government blamed U.S.-backed contra rebels. The radio called the blast a “cold-blooded, premediated” attack using a “sophisticated” remote control device from the United States. Defense Ministry officials confirmed that the attack took place in Jinotega province but offered no details. The Foreign Ministry is preparing a protest to Washington.
