MELBA, Ida. — A man who allegedly blew up a parade float shaped like a space shuttle, reportedly as a practical joke, suffered burns on 20% of his body when the scheme backfired Friday, authorities said.
Carl Hinz, 24, was being treated at a medical center for second-degree burns on his face and arms, Canyon County Sheriff Bill Anderson said.
Hinz was installing a radio-controlled detonator when explosives he allegedly planted blew up, Anderson said. The shuttle float was built by parishioners of a local Roman Catholic church for a Fourth of July parade.
