MOSCOW — Cheryl Miller scored 18 points and Katrina McClain added 17 as the U.S. women’s basketball team handed the Soviet squad its first loss in international competition in 28 years, 83-60, tonight for the gold medal at the Goodwill Games.
In an arena jammed with Americans shouting “U.S.A., U.S.A.,” the U.S. team used superior shooting, rebounding and defense to hand the Soviet national team only its third loss in 155 games, dating back to 1957, when the Americans also won. The other loss was to Bulgaria in 1958.
