Tennis Roundup : Edberg Reverses a Slow Start

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden reeled off the final 12 games Thursday to register a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Argentina’s Marcelo Ingaramo and moved into the quarterfinals of the $231,000 Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.

“I’m not happy with my play. I had many problems in the beginning,” said Edberg, who trailed, 2-0, in the first set before his onslaught. “It’s quite difficult to control the ball at this high level, and this does not help to rebuild my self-confidence.”

In other second-round action, Swiss qualifier Roland Stadler, who is ranked 414th in the world, upset Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 7-6, 6-4.

Bill Scanlon ousted Glenn Layendecker, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the $100,000 Hall of Fame tournament at Newport, R.I.

Scanlon will face Danie Visser of South Africa Saturday. Visser, ranked 112th, beat Ricardo Acuna of Chile, ranked 165th, 6-3, 6-4.

In the other half of the quarterfinals scheduled today, second-seeded Tim Wilkison will play Vallis Wilder and Marc Flur will meet Eddie Edwards of South Africa.
