Councilman in Alabama City Finds That Even He Can’t Fight City Hall

United Press International

City Councilman Jack Inabinett is learning that you can’t fight City Hall even if you’re part of it.

Inabinett recently signed a complaint charging Mayor H. T. Mathis with reckless endangerment and harassment after a heated council meeting.

Inabinett said the mayor asked him several times to change his vote on an issue and “got mad when I refused.” Finally, at a convenience store where he was buying cigars, Inabinett said, Mathis pulled a knife on him and threatened him.

The councilman had the mayor arrested.

Municipal Judge Donald Colquett decided not to hear the case and ruled that a special prosecutor and judge should be brought in from elsewhere, provided the council approved payment for them.

Inabinett said the Alabama League of Municipalities advised him that it would be improper for those involved in the altercation to vote on the matter Tuesday night.

The vote not to pay the judge was 3-2 with Inabinett abstaining.
