Dr. Ellis Jones, a former mayor of Pasadena and one of the developers of the trauma unit at Huntington Memorial Hospital, has died of cancer at that hospital.
The orthopedic surgeon was 70 when he died Saturday.
Jones, who was mayor from 1978 to 1981, was a commissioner of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority at the time of his death.
Jones’ service on Pasadena’s governing Board of City Directors extended from 1973 to 1981, years which involved much of the downtown renewal that included construction of a civic center.
Jones, who served in a mobile Army surgical unit with Gen. George S. Patton’s 3rd Army in World War II, built a private practice in Pasadena, and eventually headed Huntington’s Emergency Medical Unit. Kevin Hegerty, former hospital president, credited him with helping pioneer the trauma unit there.
He is survived by his wife Anne, a son, two daughters and eight grandchildren.
