WARSAW — Margaret Schlauch, an American scholar who said she fled the United States in 1951 to avoid persecution for pro-communist views, died at age 88, the official news agency PAP said today.
The agency did not specify the cause of her death but said she died over the weekend. Ms. Schlauch was a staff member of the New York University from 1924 to 1950, and in 1951 she fled to Poland to become professor of the English language department at Warsaw University. The same year, she joined the Polish Communist Party and assumed Polish citizenship.
