Kuwait’s undersecretary of the interior, Maj. Gen. Youssef Khorafi, said his country will stand fast against terrorist demands for the release of 17 prisoners convicted of bombing the U.S. and French embassies in 1983. The Islamic Jihad (Islamic Holy War) group has demanded freedom for the 17 in exchange for American and French hostages in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Newsweek magazine said that the Beirut kidnapers of three Americans are cousins of one of Kuwait’s prisoners and that they will settle for the release of their cousin and two other Lebanese Shia Muslims. Most of the 17 are Iraqi Shias.
