The San Diego Symphony canceled the first three weeks of its 1986-87 concert season after the symphony association and the musicians’ union failed in an 11th-hour attempt to agree on a new contract. A continuing $1-million operating deficit caused the association to proceed with the unprecedented cancellation of part of the symphony’s 25-week winter season, which was to begin this month. Last spring, the financially troubled symphony was on the brink of bankruptcy and was saved only after a frantic 10-day drive raised about $2.6 million. Less than a year ago, the symphony’s future appeared bright when it moved into its new $4.8-million concert hall, the renovated Fox Theater in downtown San Diego.
