Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga announced that he will retire next August. He gave no reason, and leaders of his Jamaica Labor Party said they will try to get him to change his mind. Seaga’s term expires in 1989. His decision could result in the scheduling of new general elections, which the opposition Peoples National Party has been demanding since the Labor Party was badly defeated in municipal balloting last July. Seaga, a conservative, has tried to turn Jamaica’s sluggish economy around through free enterprise and fiscal austerity mandated by the International Monetary Fund.
